Vintage Clarice Cliff Celtic Harvest Bowl
This large circa 1940’s ceramic bowl was made by Newport Pottery of Burlsem. Cliff’s popular Celtic Harvest pattern depicts sheaves of wheat along with colorful groupings of fruits, all of which are set on a textured soft butter yellow background. This large serving bowl has the pattern’s characteristic raised surface ornamentation and features several sheaves of wheat which run around the perimeter of the piece. The bowl is outfitted with two handles which are made up of a cluster of green and yellow/blush apples and associated greenery set over two stalks of golden wheat.
The piece was designed by Clarice Cliff (1899 - 1972), renowned ceramics artist who was born and bred in Staffordshire, England. Cliff began working at Staffordshire’s AJ Wilkinson pottery factory in 1916, which was owned by the Shorter family. The Shorter family also owned Burslem based Newport Pottery, where this piece was made and decorated. Cliff’s talents were noted by the Shorter’s and she was later given her own studio where she debuted her striking Art Deco ‘Bizarre’ range in 1927. She went on to design several other patterns including this one in 1937, known as ‘Celtic Harvest’.
The bowl is in very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The bowl stands 3.5” high at its tallest point and is 11” across as measured from the farthest points of the handles.
