Beryl Cook (1926-2008)
A self-taught former seaside landlady who only took up painting in her 40's, Cook’s instantly recognisable work with its postcard-style humour had long ago won her the popularity vote.
Her flamboyant paintings of portly ladies and other exuberant characters were drawn from a lifetime of people watching - much of it in her Plymouth home.
Her paintings, which fetch £40,000 plus, document familiar social situations like girls on a hen night, in a disco or shopping, men in the pub, at a strip club or at the market.
She is credited with capturing ‘moments of social history, portrayed with a playful streak of naughtiness’.
The frame measures approx 75cm x 65cm
